About HopeSpring
California has more web design firms than anywhere else in the country, which is a mixed blessing. Enormous choice, and an enormous amount of it looks identical from the outside. Quotes range from a few hundred dollars to five figures for what's described in the same words, and most firms won't tell you which end you're at until you've sat through a call.
HopeSpring Digital is small, deliberately. Run by Caresa, a Squarespace specialist with 7+ years on the platform, more than 200 launches, and Squarespace Circle membership. We build on one platform and turn down WordPress work. Prices are on this page. We're a Minnesota studio working with clients nationally, and every project is remote, which for a California business is worth being clear-eyed about: you're getting a specialist and a lower cost base, and you're not getting someone who can meet you in person.
Three things worth knowing:
You work with the builder. Caresa runs every project from first call to launch. In a market where the person who sells the work and the person who does it are usually different people, that's the main structural difference.
Planned as one system. Structure, copy, design, analytics together rather than sequentially. Sites designed first and optimized later look good and produce nothing, which is a pattern worth recognizing before paying for it.
Small on purpose. We take a limited number of projects, which means we say no to work that isn't a fit, including when the honest answer is that a local agency serves you better.

WHY CALIFORNIA BUSINESSES CHOOSE SQUARESPACE
Most people who reach out have done real research and hit the same wall: everything sounds the same, and the platform question keeps coming back.
For most California small businesses, Squarespace holds up:
-
Hosting, SSL, uptime, updates handled by the platform. No plugin stack, nothing breaking overnight. If your last site needed a retainer just to stay functional, this is the relevant difference.
-
Responsive layouts from the start, which matters given how much California local search happens on a phone in transit.
-
Editable titles and meta descriptions, automatic sitemaps, SSL, clean URLs, image compression. A head start, not the finish line.
-
Hours, photos, services. No developer, no ticket queue, no retainer required just to change a phone number. Or hand it back to us as a preference rather than a dependency.
-
Your account, your domain, your content, in your name, paying Squarespace directly. Worth asking any firm you're considering how that works with them, because in this market the answers vary a lot and the difference matters when you want to leave.
Where Squarespace isn't right: large-catalog ecommerce, complex custom applications, layered membership systems, and anything needing heavy database work belong elsewhere. In California specifically, we turn down more projects on this basis than anywhere else, because the businesses reaching out skew more technical. If yours is one, we'll say so on the call.
FIVE THINGS MOST SQUARESPACE BUILDS SKIP (AND WE DON'T)
Plenty of designers will build you a Squarespace site. For most it's occasional work rather than the thing they do, and that shows up in five reliable places.
1. Keyword research before any design decision
Structure should follow how people search, not how a template arranged itself. California is where this matters most and gets done least, because statewide terms are close to meaningless competitively while the searches that actually convert are neighborhood or corridor level. A business in Pasadena competes on entirely different terms than one twenty minutes away, and treating "Los Angeles" as the target is how a lot of budget disappears. That gets settled before design.
2. Copy written by someone who Understands the business
Most agency copy in this market reads like it was optimized for a pitch deck rather than a customer. Ours should sound like you explaining the work to someone who asked a real question. Specific, plain, no positioning language. It also needs organizing so search engines can follow it, which comes down to real heading structure and internal links that go somewhere useful.
3. Speed as a build requirement, not a later fix
A page taking four seconds on a phone loses a large share of visitors before the headline arrives. Two causes dominate. Oversized images, and accumulated third-party scripts, which is endemic among businesses that have run paid campaigns. Tracking pixels, chat widgets, popup tools, booking embeds, and review scripts pile up over years and nobody removes the dead ones. We audit what's actually loading and cut what isn't earning its weight.
4. Local and AI search both accounted for
Ranking in Maps for the area you serve generally beats anything broader, and answers from ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, and Perplexity are taking traffic from traditional results quickly. Both lean on structured data, a block of code invisible to visitors stating what the business is, where it works, and what it sells. Squarespace generates very little of it. We write it by hand for every page and connect it to your Google Business Profile.
5. A handoff that leaves you capable
At launch you should understand your own site. Walkthrough recorded on your actual site, written guide, check-in at thirty days. The purpose is that you never need a retainer to change your own hours. Plenty of clients keep us on anyway, which is fine as long as it's a choice.

Who We Build for
Four kinds of owner account for most of our work. If one of these is recognizable, we're probably a fit.
The Modern Tradesman
Plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, contractors, landscapers, pool services, tree services. The work is steady and the site contributes nothing to it.
The Brand-Builder
Salons, boutiques, studios, restaurants, wineries, nonprofits, retailers. Appearance is part of the product and the site should convert as well as it photographs.
The Personal Brand
Coaches, consultants, therapists, realtors, agents. Your site is usually a serious prospect's first real impression.
The Expander
Established businesses with a site already, wanting measurable return. Past launch, ready for compounding work.
How a Project Actually Runs
Six steps, refined across 200+ builds, designed to remove the drift that makes most web projects unpleasant.
*On time zones: we're on Central, two hours ahead of you. In practice, that means morning meetings land easily and late-afternoon ones need scheduling. Most clients find the offset helps, since work submitted at the end of your day is often addressed before you start the next one.
BUSINESSES WE'VE HELPED GROW
More than 200 Squarespace sites. Seven-plus years on one platform. The businesses we work with want a site that earns a stranger's trust, appears when someone searches their service and their area, and makes contact easy.
We work with clients across California, remotely:
Los Angeles and the surrounding area including Pasadena, Long Beach, Santa Monica, Burbank, and Glendale Orange County including Irvine, Anaheim, Newport Beach, and Huntington Beach San Diego including Carlsbad, Encinitas, Chula Vista, and Oceanside The Bay Area including San Jose, Oakland, Berkeley, Palo Alto, and Walnut Creek Sacramento and the Central Valley including Roseville, Folsom, Fresno, Stockton, Modesto, and Bakersfield The Central Coast including Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, and Monterey Wine country and the north including Napa, Sonoma, Santa Rosa, and Chico
Being straightforward about California: this is the most competitive web design and local search market in the country, and how hard your particular fight is depends almost entirely on your category and how tightly you define your area. Broad metro terms in Los Angeles or the Bay Area are contested by firms with budgets we don't have and wouldn't pretend to. Neighborhood-level, suburb-level, and specific-service searches are a different picture, and that's usually where a well-built site can actually win. Plenty of California businesses in the Central Valley, the Central Coast, and the smaller metros face competition no stiffer than a Midwest market. We'll give you a realistic read on the call, including when the honest answer is that a local firm with local relationships is the better choice for you.
We keep our portfolio private to protect our clients privacy.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Two honest reasons and one honest caveat. You get a specialist who works on one platform rather than a generalist, and you get a cost base that isn't carrying California overhead, which shows up in the price. The caveat is that we can't meet you in person, and for some businesses that matters enough to outweigh both. If it does, hire locally. We'd rather say that now than three weeks in.
-
If you want to run your own site without maintaining it, Squarespace. If you need deep customization, a large catalog, or complex integrations, WordPress. We turn down more California projects on this basis than from anywhere else, because the businesses reaching out skew more technical. Straight answer on the call even when it sends you elsewhere.
-
Depends on the fight you pick. Broad metro terms in a saturated category, realistically no, not against firms with far larger budgets. Neighborhood-level and specific-service searches, frequently yes, and that's usually where the actual customers are anyway. What limits most Squarespace sites isn't the platform, it's that nobody wrote structured data, nobody planned the page structure around real searches, and nobody built proper location pages. We'll give you a realistic read on your category rather than a confident one.
-
Yes, and in California it's usually the single highest-return thing to do. We work out which places justify a real page based on your service radius, then build them properly. Duplicating a page and swapping the city name hasn't worked for years and can hurt you.

We're on Central, two hours ahead. Morning meetings are easy, late-afternoon ones need scheduling. Most clients find the offset useful, since end-of-day requests are often handled before their next morning.
-
No. Retainers are optional and month to month. Plenty of clients launch and never add one.
